Snacks that carry their weight
Things that do real work in three bites, with no cooking and no smell.
A snack used to be the thing between meals. Now it is often the meal — three bites at four in the afternoon might be a quarter of your day’s protein, so it had better be carrying something.
What gets on this list
Three rules, and everything here passes all three.
- At least 10g of protein in about three bites. Below that it’s a snack in the old sense, and you don’t have the room anymore.
- No cooking. On the days you need this most, the stove is the problem.
- No strong smell. If it announces itself from the next room, it won’t get eaten on a bad afternoon.
Four that always work

The cheese is the only one under 10g, and it’s here because on the afternoons when nothing sounds good it is often the single thing that does.
Protein per bite: Greek yogurt 4.3, cottage cheese 4.3, smoked salmon 3.7, sharp cheddar 3.5, crackers 0.6 grams.
Protein per bite. The crackers are here because they are what most of us reached for in month one, and they cost the same room as any of the others.
